The book is divided into three sections. The first include 8 chapters, starting with an examination of problems concerning mobility and urban parking in the historical evolution of our country. Then the authors explore the organization of parking and its relative norms, with a specific interest in the variety of parking demand. Survey methods and the correct interpretation of price and demand are investigated in relation to Italian cities. With regard to regulations, Legge Tognoli (Tognoli Law), the new rules of the road and the course of action for Urban Traffic Plans (PUT) are carefully examined.
An entire chapter is devoted to definitions. This is to give some guidance to the use of these terms which can be confusing and are often used inappropriately. For example, the expressions parking, way, parking space are not always used to define the same concept. For several terms the relative English version is also indicated.
After having examined the environmental obstacles that frequently create delay and may prevent the construction of multistorey car parks, other aspects of on street parking and on the drafting of Urban Traffic Plans are taken into account. Part one ends with a chapter dedicated to various solutions for car parks in private ownership.

Aspects concerning the enviromental harmonization of multi-storey car parks.
Part two considers exhaustively all technical and structural aspects concerning different types of public parking: on street, modular, multistorey, above and underground, including mechanized car parks. An example is presented for each type of car park with all relative technical details such as plant, fittings etc. This second section is intended for designers but is likely to be of great interest to building contractors, professional operators and public authorities. Important information related to the many operating and functional aspects of car parks is included. This information should be considered prior to initializing a car park project. These structures require large investments and consequently must be carefully planned for the benefit of both owners and users. Part two contains also two chapters on Safety Regulations and operating aspects of building site.

Many pages are devoted to analyze all the technical aspects of multi-storey car parks, both above and underground. |
Part three, the last section, opens with a chapter examining costs involved in the construction of a car park and goes on to investigate day to day operations. It offers a complete outline of all points of view from the operations to economics. Data necessary for proper financial planning and viable operations of a car park are listed. This is of great importance for all projects whether funded privately or publicly. This section is up to date to 2008 and lists all prescribing rules at present available to public authorities for the accomplishment of car parks and proper operations. Parking systems in urban centres are also considered. The volume ends with an evaluation of facets of public/private partnerships in Italy over recent years.
Apart from several black and white photos and diagrams, the book has a section with 20 photos in full colour showing the most interesting multistorey and underground car parks in Italy and in the world. One of the important aims of the authors is to supply the necessary information to avoid the poor standards of design and workmanship present in many car parks today.

« A significant number of car parks have been planned and built in these last years, thanks to the effort and to the diligence of public administrations and operators. Traffic and parking problems are nowadays so evident and important in our cities and have created an uncomfortable situation requiring emergency measures » - this is the conclusion reached by the authors. « It is quite evident - they continue - that a proper coherent action, particularly if carried out with great determination, can guarantee real progress towards a solution to current parking problems. This offers great advantages, in both ease and cost of travel for the majority of Italian citizens, considering the high costs caused by bureaucratic delays and operational uncertainties. Our greatest satisfaction would be to have made a contribution to the industry and the achievement of the abovementioned goals by the spread of important information contained in our book ».
